The Rigid Foam Fallacy: Why Thicker is not always better when buying Replacement Hot Tub Covers are for Nordic Spas Hot Tubs

When purchasing replacement hot tub covers for Nordic Spas hot tubs, it is a common misconception that the harder the spa cover, the better.  While soft, lightweight spa covers with little or no foam core have earned a reputation for being flimsy and low quality, it may not necessarily be true.  As a matter of fact, foam cores will eventually saturate water in the long run, no matter how thick or thin they are.  The only difference is, the thicker the foam cores, the harder it is to move them around when you want to remove them from the spa or the hot tub.  Wrestling with heavy spa covers can also be hazardous as you could get injured when pulling them out.

Another reason why heavy and rigid replacement hot tub covers are no better is that they lie over the spa or hot tub.  While these do a great job in keeping gunk and algae formation away from the spa and hot tub, they do not insulate the water enough to keep them warm all year round.  The reason is because the sit OVER the water instead of ON the water.  The space between the water surface and the underside of the hot tub cover allow the condensation of the water steam which will create cool water droplets that fall back into the water or permeate into the vapor barrier and invade the foam core.  Once the foam core becomes saturated with water, its insulating capacity is dramatically decreased.

Rigid replacement hot tub covers for Nordic Spas hot tubs are also prone to breakage, no matter how much you take care of it.  For starters, the steam which carries the chemicals that purify the water can eat through the vapor barriers.  Once this happens, the water then enters the foam core, making it heavier, thus damaging the hot tub cover itself.  While replacing the foam cores and taping the vapor carriers can fix the problem, it is only a temporary solution.  Sooner or later, it will succumb to an even greater damage and the next thing you know, you’ll be spending hundreds of dollars on frequent hot tub cover replacements.

So the next time you plan on purchasing replacement hot tub covers, you must remember that thicker isn’t always better.  Apart from its lesser insulation capacity, rigid hot tub covers are also accidents waiting to happen.  Imagine the back pain, or worse, neck injury you’ll have when trying to haul the heavy hot tub cover for foam core replacement or cleaning.   Apart from that, you’ll have to spend on cover lifters to have the hot tub cover removed, making it more impractical than you ever imagined.  Why settle for something that could eventually lead you to unnecessary expenses when there are safer and more cost efficient alternatives to keeping your hot tub in tip-top shape?
